What is a planetary gearbox?

For instance, a three-speed hub uses a single-stage planetary gear system, whereas a five-speed hub utilizes two stages. Each system encompasses a reduction state, direct coupling, and an acceleration mode for versatile performance.

In mathematical terms, the smallest reduction ratio is 3:1, while the largest is 10:1. If the ratio falls below 3, the sun gear enlarges disproportionately compared to the planet gears. Conversely, a ratio exceeding 10 results in a sun wheel that's too small, diminishing torque output. Typically, these ratios are absolute and expressed as whole numbers.
