What is a planetary gearbox?

A planetary gearbox is a highly efficient mechanism where both the input and output shafts are aligned, providing an innovative solution to achieve maximum torque in the most compact form, a concept known as torque density.

The bicycle's acceleration hub is a prime example of a planet-wheel mechanism: Marvel at how such a small hub can deliver immense power and functionality! For a three-speed hub, a single-stage planetary gear system is employed, while a five-speed hub uses a two-stage setup. Each planetary gear system offers a reduction state, a direct coupling, and an acceleration mode.

In mathematical terms, the smallest reduction ratio is 3:1, while the largest is 10:1. If the ratio is less than 3, the sun gear becomes disproportionately large compared to the planet gears. Conversely, beyond a 10:1 ratio, the sun wheel becomes too small, leading to a decrease in torque. Typically, these ratios are absolute, represented as whole numbers.
